MY BATTLE WITH MOLD AND WASHINGTON COURT APARTMENTS

I moved into Washington Court Apartments on June 1, 2013. And I have been sick a lot since then. It started with little things at first like sore throats, and other cold like symptoms. By October 2013, I couldn't put my shoes on because my legs and feet got swollen to that point. I have been battling fluid retention ever since. One time I almost died. I had a hard time breathing, so I went to the ER. They said my lungs were filling up with fluid. Had I not gone into the ER I probably would have died.

Also, since moving in this place, I have been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat). I have experienced excruciating nerve pain, mainly in my feet and lower legs. Also, pain in my left arm, neck and face. Sometime I have a very sharp pain at the top of my head.

These health problems were and are far worse than anything I've experienced before moving in this place. So, I concluded the cause was and is environmental. But could not figure what it was, that is until February of 2018.

In February of this year, mold showed up. It looks like it was there before and it was just painted over. Also, several places on the ceilings and walls were discolored. It is plain this apartment had water damage, and mold, and someone painted over it.

During my research I came to believe that my health problems are the result of toxic mold exposure. Naturally I complained to the property manager, who in my opinion didn't seem to care. I continued to complain and insist something be done. I probably wouldn't have been so insiting if this thing was not threatening my life. Eventually the property manager brought in a contractor. I talked to the contractor and we decided on a course of action, and a time when they would start. But the property manager had other ideas. He decided something else would be done, and he didn't care how uncomfortable his course of action would be to me. Also, he decided that the contractor would come in at 7:30 in the morning, in spite of the fact that I've been sick a lot and wanted mornings to be my time to rest. I said that they come in anytime afternoons. The property manager then twisted what I said and made statements to the effect that I am refusing to let the the workers in, which is a lie.

Dealing with the property manager was so frustrating I eventually lost my cool. Left a voicemail where I called him names, and said that I would make his life miserable. Of course, this was a statement out of frustration. At another time, I was trying to show him all the mold on the buildings, on the trees, etc. He dismissed it by saying it was dirt. Once again I got frustrated, and said to him, "you don't want to fix a damn thing."

Shortly there after, I received a paper that gave me till June 30th to vacate the premises, in retaliation for my complaining. That didn't happen. So, he filed for eviction with the District Magistrate, Anthony J. Verna. The hearing was scheduled for July 17, 2018. The Thursday before I felt like I had a cold. Sore throat, coughing, etc. So I requested a continuance to try to get over the cold. The new date was July 24, 2018.

On July 24th, I felt really sick. I had been battling constipation to the point I thought I might have a blockage. So I went to the ER, and a blockage was ruled out. But I felt so sick. I sent a request for another continuance. This time it was denied. Because I wasn't there, the judgment went against me. That means I have to appeal the decision without a lawyer (at this point).

I am convinced that the owners and property manager of Washington Court Apartments want me dead. Why? Because eviction for me is a death sentence. I am 62 years old, not in the best of health. If I'm homeless, where will I take my vitamins. Where will I go to the bathroom. Etc.

You see, I'm on Section 8. They will only help me with a one bedroom apartment. I've been looking, but have not found any. So, what am I supposed to do?
