Earlier today as I was preparing a post, my a screen popped up a message from Microsoft. Said my computer contacted them about a virus. It said if I try to delete the message, or turned of my computer would be disabled.
It instructed me to call a toll free number. It went to India and I had a hard time understanding the customer service rep.
He inspected my computer, and determined there was a "worm". He cleaned it as much as he could. And I did somethings too, like clearing everything from my browser. He said I should do that rather often.
But, I'm suspicious. While I followed his lead something didn't seem right. I mean he didn't do anything that I saw that made difference. And he insulted me by saying I am not computer savvy. Of course that's true, but it's not a good policy to insult a customer.
Eventually he got down to the money. He said I could give you over to a technician, and it would cost $199.99. I have dealt with Microsoft before and I don't remember them asking for money. You see, as long as they support Windows 7, they will take care of it, if they can do something from the office. If they send a technician to the home, of course that would cost.
Well, when I told this rep I had no money, he didn't seem interested in helping any more.
The question I have, was I being scammed? Or could there be a real problem? Or could it be both.
I will be online for a while longer. I would really appreciate your input. I will be shutting down perhaps in an hour, and do a long scan that could take 4 hours. And while that's happening I'm going to try to sleep.
What do you think?
